MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL - The driver of a tractor-trailer was hospitalized after a crash that snarled traffic on Florida's Turnpike early Wednesday.
According to WSVN, the accident occurred in the turnpike's southbound lanes near Okeechobee Road at around 5:15 a.m. The truck crashed into an embankment and overturned. Three other vehicles were also involved in the wreck, although the details remain unclear.
The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene along with local emergency crews. They managed to extricate the truck driver, who had been trapped inside the vehicle. The driver was airlifted to an area hospital.
The total number of injuries was not yet clear, but none were believed to be life-threatening.
The northbound and southbound lanes of the Turnpike were closed in the area as the injured were being assisted and the scene was being cleared.
